North Carolina head football coach Bill Belichick appears thrilled about a second crack at the TCU Horned Frogs.
College football insider Brett McMurphy shared comments from Belichick on Friday, including the eight-time Super Bowl champion’s take on kicking off the season against TCU in Dublin, Ireland, for the Aer Lingus College Football Classic.
Last year’s home opener saw TCU rip into the Tar Heels 48-14 in Chapel Hill.
Josh Hoover, now with Curt Cignetti and the Indiana Hoosiers, threw for 284 yards, two touchdowns and one interception; UNC’s Max Johnson was just 9-of-11 for 103 yards and a touchdown. Belichick led UNC to a 4-8 finish with a 2-6 record in the ACC; The offense struggled to produce an average of 19.2 points per game; They’d catch two conference wins over Syracuse and Stanford, but Belichick’s first season as coach ended with three consecutive losses.
Belichick tapped the controversial, 65-year-old Bobby Petrino, who managed to have Arkansas finish 13th among the country’s offense in his return as the program’s offensive coordinator. TCU enters the season as a dark horse to win the Big 12, and the Tar Heels still have a question mark at quarterback with August knocking on the door.
Historically, international games derail the losing end’s season. Unless the Horned Frogs arrived disastrously unprepared, I’m not sure how Sonny Dykes and TCU cough one up to a Tar Heels program that’s not all that more promising than the last.
