Terence Crawford Says He Would Have Honored Canelo Rematch Clause

Terence Crawford says a rematch with Canelo Alvarez never became an option after their superfight, but not because he turned it down. Instead, Crawford revealed there was no rematch clause in the contract, and no one from Canelo’s side ever attempted to make a second fight.

Crawford explained that he would have honored a contractual rematch if one had existed.

“Canelo, that was off the table. There was no rematch clause. Nobody said anything about Canelo. Still to this day, nobody have said nothing about Canelo,” said Crawford to The Breakfast Club Power 105.1 FM.

When asked if he would have accepted another fight had it been presented, Crawford left little doubt.

“If the rematch clause was in the contract, then I would honor that. Okay. Just off of who I am,” said Crawford.

Crawford went on to explain that his retirement decision wasn’t based solely on the Canelo fight. He said he examined the rest of the boxing landscape and didn’t see another matchup that would enhance his legacy. His original plan had been to face the winner of a potential undisputed middleweight championship after moving back down from 168 pounds, giving him an opportunity to pursue another historic accomplishment.

That scenario never developed after the middleweight title picture changed, leaving Crawford without the type of fight he wanted.

“I’m into making history, making legacy fights. That would have been a historical legacy fight,” said Crawford. “This guy come from 135 to 168, then come back down to 160, be undisputed again. But yeah, it didn’t play out like that.”

Although Crawford maintains that a second fight with Canelo was never discussed, his comments make clear that he wasn’t opposed to the idea. Had a rematch clause been included in the original agreement, he says he would have fulfilled it before bringing his Hall of Fame career to a close.
