With the expanded College Football Playoff creating more opportunities for non-Power Four teams, the best Group of Six quarterbacks now have a chance to compete for national recognition. These five quarterbacks enter the 2026 season with the talent and opportunity to lead their teams into the spotlight.
1. Owen McCown — UTSA
McCown headlines the Group of Six quarterback rankings after a breakout season with UTSA.
The son of former NFL quarterback Josh McCown has developed into one of the nation’s most polished passers, combining accuracy, decision-making and leadership. If the Roadrunners are going to compete for a conference championship and enter the College Football Playoff conversation, it will start with McCown.
2. Micah Alejado — Hawaii
Alejado emerged as one of the biggest surprises in college football last season.
His quick release, confidence, toughness and command of Hawaii’s offense make him one of the most entertaining quarterbacks outside the Power Four. Another strong season could put him firmly on NFL scouts’ radar and establish him as one of the top Group of Six players in the country.
3. Nick Minicucci — Delaware
Minicucci enters the season with high expectations after taking over Delaware’s offense.
His ability to push the ball downfield while protecting the football gives the Blue Hens a talented quarterback capable of leading a successful season. If Delaware competes for a conference title in just its second season at the FBS level, Minicucci will play a major role.
Layne has steadily developed into one of the Mountain West’s most reliable quarterbacks.
While he may not receive the national attention of some other Group of Six stars, his experience and consistency make him one of the conference’s top returning quarterbacks.
Madsen rounds out the list after helping Boise State remain one of the premier Group of Six programs.
Although he has played alongside elite talent in recent seasons, Madsen has consistently delivered when the Broncos needed him most. Another successful season would further solidify his place among Boise State’s top quarterbacks.
