In a season defined by depth and consistency for the Purdue Boilermakers men’s basketball, one of the most important developments was the emergence of sophomore guard C. J. Cox.

What began as a promising freshman foundation quickly turned into a true breakout year—one that now positions Cox as a key piece heading into his junior season.

After an impressive freshman campaign in which he played all 36 games and started 23, Cox elevated nearly every aspect of his game as a sophomore. His role expanded significantly, starting all 31 games and increasing his minutes to over 24 per contest.

With that opportunity came production during his sophomore campaign. 8.5 points per game, 2.8 rebounds per game, 1.3 assists per game, 45% shooting from the field.

While those numbers may not jump off the page compared to Purdue’s star power of this past season from Fletcher Loyer, TKR and Braden Smith, they tell the story of a player growing into efficiency, reliability, and trust within a high-level system.

Cox didn’t just improve statistically—he delivered in big moments. In one of the season’s most notable performances, he exploded for 27 points in a road win over Northwestern, scoring 21 in the second half and hitting the go-ahead shot late. Earlier in his career, he showed similar flashes, including a 23-point performance on 9-of-11 shooting against Nebraska, highlighting his ability to take over games when given the green light.

Those performances revealed something deeper than numbers: confidence. Cox proved he can be more than a role player—he can be a difference-maker and a leader on the court for Purdue Basketball.

One of Cox’s most encouraging developments is his shooting consistency. Nearly 38% from three-point range, over 57% field goal percentage For a guard in Purdue’s system, spacing and decision-making are critical—and Cox has steadily become a dependable option on the perimeter. His ability to stretch defenses compliments Purdue’s inside-out offensive identity.

The trajectory is clear: Cox has improved from a rotational freshman to a full-time starter and reliable contributor. The next step? Becoming the featured weapon of the Purdue Basketball Team.

Heading into his junior year, several factors point toward a major leap.

With increased confidence and proven scoring bursts, Cox is a candidate to see more designed touches. After logging starter minutes in the Big Ten, the game should slow down even more. Already trusted defensively—highlighted by lockdown performances in conference play—he has the tools to become a complete guard. If his usage rises even slightly, a jump into double-digit scoring is well within reach.

C.J. Cox may not yet be the headline name on Purdue’s roster, but his progression tells the story of a player on the verge of something bigger. His sophomore season was about proving he belongs. His junior season could be about proving he’s indispensable, where he could be the leading scorer of the 2026-2027 Purdue Basketball Team.
