Lingering questions out of Detroit involving Dylan Larkin and Simon Edvinsson

NHL Media: EJ Hradek on the impact that the Detroit Red Wings front office change will have on Dylan Larkin, and they still have restricted free agent defenseman Simon Edvinsson to re-sign him. What kind of money will he be after.

** NHLRumors.com transcription

Jameson Coyle: How does the front office change impact Dylan Larkin and the Red Wings, that relationship now moving forward?

Hradek: “Well, I think it really will depend, obviously, on who they hire, right? If they stay internal to go to like a Sean Horcoff or a Kris Draper or even a Nick Lindstrom, somebody who’s been part of that group, I don’t know how much it really changes.

If they go outside the organization, and you know I’ve heard Brendan Shanahan’s name mentioned. There’s there’s a lot of other different candidates who I’m sure the Red Wings will want to talk to, but it probably depends who it is. But it might be an opportunity to kind of mend some fences.

Dylan Larkin is on a five-year contract there in Detroit. It is a very difficult deal for the Red Wings to make as a team that has missed the playoffs for several consecutive years, because he has given them a short list of teams. Those teams understand that the Detroit Red Wings are up against it, and they are not going to offer the kind of players, the hockey kind of trade that the Red Wings would need to make so they can continue to move forward and try to get into the playoffs.

So this would be an opportunity maybe for some fence spending. I think it would be great if the Red Wings could keep Larkin at least for another season to see if they could kind of keep that together there.

Another thing that we haven’t talked about a lot because the Larkin story has been so big and the Yzerman dismissal is Simon Edvinsson is out there, and he is a he’s a restricted free agent. He can be offer sheeted, but I don’t think he will be because everybody knows the Red Wings would match.

Top players could start looking to shorter-term deals to maximize their value

But the question is, what is the number for Simon Edvinson? Because we talked about it earlier. For Drysdale, it was $6.5 (million). Now Edmondson’s going to get more than that. Is he going to get more than Brant Clark, who is at 7.5, 7.4 (million), Maybe he might want upwards of nine. So that’s another thing for the Detroit Red Wings management group to have to manage Edvinsson, a 23-year-old player who is the sixth overall pick in the 21 draft. He’s an important piece for them.
