Sunday, July 19 – Cork: The 2026 U16 Girls 8-Nations brought together eight of Europe’s leading youth hockey nations for a week of high-quality competition at the Mardyke Arena in Cork, with Germany ultimately crowned champions after an impressive run to the gold medal.
Held from 12–18 July, the tournament featured Ireland, England, Scotland, Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and Spain, with the teams split into two pools for the opening phase.
Pool A consisted of the Netherlands, Ireland, England and Spain, while Belgium, Germany, Poland and Scotland made up Pool B.
The competition got underway on Sunday, 12 July, with Pool B opening proceedings. Belgium made a confident start with victory over Scotland, while Germany also got their campaign off to a winning start against Poland.
Attention then turned to Pool A, where hosts Ireland faced the Netherlands. Ireland made the perfect start by taking an early lead, but the Dutch responded strongly to claim a 4-1 victory. England and Spain then closed out the opening day, with England producing an impressive result against Spain to immediately put themselves into contention for a place in the semi-finals.
The second day of pool action saw Belgium and Germany continue their strong starts. Belgium recorded a convincing 5-0 victory over Poland to make it two wins from two, while Germany followed suit with a 7-1 win over Scotland.
The Netherlands maintained their excellent form in Pool A, beating England 3-0, before Ireland and Spain played out a dramatic encounter. Ireland appeared to have rescued a point with a late penalty corner, only for Spain to be awarded a last-gasp penalty stroke, resulting in a share of the points.
Following a rest day, the final round of pool matches took place on Wednesday, 15 July, with plenty still to play for.
Spain produced one of the results of the pool stage by stunning the Netherlands with a 1-0 victory. Despite the defeat, the Dutch held on to top spot in Pool A thanks to their earlier results. Ireland and England then met in a fiercely contested encounter, with England emerging victorious to claim second place in the group and secure their place in the semi-finals.
In Pool B, Germany and Belgium had already guaranteed their places in the last four, but the final round still provided plenty of drama. Scotland secured their first victory of the tournament with a 3-1 win over Poland, while Belgium and Germany played out an entertaining 1-1 draw. The result was enough for Germany to retain top spot in the pool.
The crossover matches began on Friday, 17 July, with the third- and fourth-placed teams from each pool moving into Pool C to determine the final tournament rankings.
Spain proved too strong for Poland, recording an emphatic 8-0 victory, before Ireland delighted the home supporters with a 5-2 win over Scotland.
The semi-finals then produced two compelling encounters. Belgium and the Netherlands could not be separated in the first semi-final, with the match eventually going to a shootout. The Dutch held their nerve when it mattered most to secure their place in the gold medal match.
In the second semi-final, Germany returned to winning ways with a commanding 3-0 victory over England, booking their place in Saturday’s final and setting up a meeting with the Netherlands.
The final day at the Mardyke Arena saw the tournament’s remaining positions decided before the medals were handed out.
Spain finished fifth after overcoming Scotland, while Ireland produced a confident final performance to beat Poland and secure sixth place. Scotland therefore finished seventh, with Poland rounding out the competition in eighth.
The bronze medal match saw Belgium recover from their semi-final disappointment to claim third place. England threatened a second-half comeback, but Belgium held firm to secure a 4-2 victory and take home the bronze medal.
The gold medal match then brought the tournament to a thrilling conclusion. Germany produced a superb performance against the Netherlands, securing a convincing 3-0 victory to claim the U16 Girls 8-Nations title and cap an outstanding week of hockey.
