The SEC is Running Scared

Welcome to Tuesday Takes, where I give you three takes from the Big 12. It was a jam-packed week full of exciting news, but several things caught my attention over the last few days.

Greg Sankey is Full of Crap

To kick of SEC Media Days on Monday, commissioner Greg Sankey started off with a bang. When asked whether talk of an SEC breakaway was simply leverage or something more substantial, Sankey responded: “They’re real. The frustrations (for some) that bring them to the point of saying we should look at something significantly different.”

As scary as that may sound for some, I am here to tell you that Greg Sankey is full of crap. He may think the SEC is the end-all, be-all of college football but there is no chance in hell that he is going to break away from the rest of college football. I am not buying it.

The SEC is Scared

Along with all the craziness going on this week, news broke that LSU officially canceled their future football home-and-home series against Arizona State. The two-game series was scheduled for the 2029 and 2030 seasons, and it was terminated to accommodate the SEC’s move to a nine-game conference schedule.

This is the second SEC to do this, as Alabama decided to cancel its series against Oklahoma State earlier this year as well. Call me crazy, but it seems like the SEC doesn’t want any part of the Big 12 because they are afraid to lose and possibly lose out on a playoff spot.

Eli Drinkwitz is A Whiner

During an interview at SEC Media Days, Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz said that part of the reason why the Big Ten has won three straight national championships is that they aren’t required to play a Power Four non-conference game.

Do what? So is that why Indiana beat Alabama by 35 in the playoffs? The fact that this is coming from Drinkwitz is hilarious because he’s never made it to a conference championship game or the playoffs. Anytime his team plays someone with a pulse, they fold up faster than a cheap tent.

New Name, More Money

With the news of Texas Tech changing their stadium name to Galaxy Stadium, it just goes to show the landscape we are in. No longer are traditional names being kept because it just goes to the highest bidder.

I don’t blame Texas Tech one bit for taking the money. If someone paid me $75 million for 15 years to change the name, I’d do the exact same thing. To me, this is going to happen more often with schools, not just the name of the stadium. Expect logos to be everywhere because where there’s space, there’s room to make a dollar.
