Jedd Fisch found an unexpected way to make sense of one of the wildest storylines of his coaching tenure at Washington. Speaking at Big Ten Media Days, the Huskies head coach addressed quarterback Demond Williams Jr.’s brief flirtation with the transfer portal back in January, drawing a comparison to how professional sports handle player disputes.
“I looked at it through the eyes of an NFL coach. Sometimes a player asks for a trade and doesn’t get it,” Fisch said. “Sometimes a player holds out for a couple of days and comes back. Sometimes a player doesn’t report to OTAs and then only shows up at mandatory minicamp. As a coach, you understand there’s things that go on in other people’s lives that you’re not in control of. But I tried to educate our players in that short period of time like, welcome to the new world order.”
Fisch said the situation ultimately strengthened his relationship with Williams rather than damaging it.
“Things are going to be different than they once were. What we’re going to do is stay consistent, respect the situation, and explain that hey, this is part of what we’re going to deal with,” Fisch said. “We’re going to welcome him back. He never went into the portal, and he never went to another team. We had a few days that we had to have some good discussions, and I thought that open dialogue we had was 10 times better than any conversation we had before.”
Williams announced his intention to enter the transfer portal in early January, just five days after signing a reported $4 million deal to stay at Washington for 2026.
Reports linked him to LSU and Miami before he reversed course roughly 48 hours later, with the school reportedly prepared to challenge the legality of him breaking his contract. Williams later admitted the decision stemmed from “really bad advice” and called it a mistake.
Fisch’s comments suggest the situation is now firmly in the past.
Williams completed 69.5 percent of his passes for 3,065 yards and 25 touchdowns last season, and both sides appear focused on building toward 2026 rather than revisiting the winter’s turbulence.
