UCLA Bruins quarterback Nico Iamaleava has seen a lot in his short time as a college football player, and he’s been given quite a unique perspective.
He was a star recruit in the class of 2023, ranked as a 5-star and the consensus No. 3 overall recruit in the nation. Everyone wanted Iamaleava, but he ended up committing to the Tennessee Volunteers.
He spent two seasons at Tennessee before shocking the college football world and transferring to UCLA in the spring of 2025.
He’s now heading into his second season as UCLA’s starting quarterback, and having had the chance to play in both the SEC and the Big Ten, Iamaleava was asked at Big Ten media days for his thoughts on the ever-present Big Ten vs. SEC debate.
“I think it’s two great leagues. Two great, physical leagues,” Iamaleava said, according to Thomas Goldkamp of On3. “I think SEC brings a lot of physicality. But I think over the years it’s kind of leveled out in terms of the playing field. I think everybody is able to get high-level athletes and we’re all able to kind of piece it evenly, so it’s been beautiful to see.”

The Big Ten has won three championships in a row, but there’s little doubting the SEC’s dominance over the past 20 or so seasons.
One of the big talking points in favor of the SEC over the years has been the depth of championship-level programs.
Even the mid-tier programs could seemingly compete against anyone else in the country on a year to year basic. The same wasn’t able to be said about the Big Ten for a long time, but the Indiana Hoosiers just won a national championship — so things have clearly changed.
Iamaleava doesn’t believe the SEC is necessarily the “deeper” conference.
“I don’t know. I wouldn’t say there’s any truth to that,” he said. “I think there’s definitely a lot of tough SEC teams that every week it’s going to be a game, but I feel the same way in the Big Ten. Yeah, I think strength of schedule can matter at times, but I think we all pretty much have similar strengths of schedule.”
Last season for UCLA, Iamaleava threw for 1,928 yards and 13 touchdowns with seven interceptions, while rushing for 505 yards and four touchdowns.
In his one full season as the starting quarterback for Tennessee, he threw for 2,616 yards and 19 touchdowns (five interceptions) while rushing for 358 yards and three touchdowns.
