Stop Trying to Have a Slow Backswing

Show/Hide Notes and Q&A

The Problem with Over-Control: Many golfers struggle with a backswing that feels stiff or overly deliberate. If you try to control every inch of the takeaway, you often end up “grabbing” or pulling the club down abruptly to create speed. This kills your natural rhythm and limits your total distance.

Find Your Natural Rhythm: Every golfer has an ideal swing speed, but the common thread among long hitters is a backswing that gathers momentum. Moving the club with fluid motion right from the start allows for a more athletic transition and a faster downswing without extra effort.

The Momentum Drill:

To feel this natural speed, try this simple practice routine:

The Forward Start: Take your normal setup without a ball.

Target Point: Before swinging back, point your club toward the target (forward of the ball position).

The Trigger: From that forward position, swing the club back immediately.

Gather Speed: Use the momentum of that forward-to-back movement to carry the club to the top of your swing.

Why It Works: Starting the club in motion prevents you from “freezing” over the ball. It teaches your body to allow the backswing to gather its own energy, which naturally sets up a faster, more coordinated strike. Use this as a practice swing before your real shot to reset your tempo.

Questions and Answers

Q: Should my backswing always be fast? A: There is a right rhythm for everyone, but most teachers agree that swinging back with momentum is better than being too slow or static. Momentum helps you avoid “pulling” at the ball during the downswing.

Q: Can I do the momentum drill while playing on the course? A: Absolutely. It is an excellent practice swing to use behind the ball. It helps you feel a nice natural swing and prevents you from over-thinking the mechanics of the takeaway during your round.

Q: How does momentum help me hit the ball farther? A: When you allow the backswing to gather momentum, you don’t have to “force” speed at the bottom. The speed is already built into the system, leading to a more efficient transfer of energy into the ball.
