Portugal and Belgium Complete Thrilling Comebacks
Portugal and Belgium both booked their places in the Round of 16 after producing memorable comeback victories.
Seleção das Quinas defeated Croatia 2-1 despite trailing midway through the second half. Fortunately for Roberto MartΓnezβs side, Cristiano Ronaldo converted from the penalty spot before GonΓ§alo Ramos headed home a dramatic late winner.
Meanwhile, Belgium required extra time to overcome Senegal after falling 2-0 behind. Rudi Garciaβs men mounted a remarkable comeback during the closing stages of normal time, with Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans scoring within five minutes to force extra time.
Tielemans then completed the turnaround by converting a late penalty in extra time, sending the Red Devils into the Round of 16.
Spain and USA Progress Comfortably
Elsewhere, Spain and co-hosts the United States also advanced with impressive victories.
La Furia Roja comfortably defeated Austria 3-0 thanks to a brace from Mikel Oyarzabal, while Pedro Porro added the third goal to complete an excellent team performance.
Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettinoβs USA defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 despite finishing the match with ten men. Folarin Balogun opened the scoring just before half-time but was later sent off midway through the second half.
Nevertheless, the USMNT remained in control and sealed the victory through Malik Tillmanβs superb free-kick. The win sets up an exciting Round of 16 meeting with Belgium.
