Nottingham Forest demolished Sunderland 5-0 at the Stadium of Light, with an own goal setting the tone for a dominant display that leaves the hosts in serious trouble.

Sunderland faced Nottingham Forest sitting 11th in the Premier League table with 46 points from 33 matches. Forest arrived in 16th place, just one point above the relegation zone after a disappointing run of recent results. The home side needed a positive result to strengthen their mid-table position, while the visitors desperately sought three points to ease their survival fears.

Forest struck early and decisively. In the 17th minute, Sunderland defender T. Hume turned the ball into his own net, gifting Forest an unexpected lead. The early setback seemed to unsettle the hosts, who struggled to find their rhythm in possession.

The visitors capitalized on Sunderland’s vulnerability. Chris Wood doubled Forest’s advantage in the 31st minute with a composed finish. Just three minutes later, Morgan Gibbs-White made it 3-0, adding a third goal that effectively ended the contest as a competition.

Matters worsened for Sunderland before half-time. Igor Jesus netted a fourth goal in the 37th minute, putting Forest firmly in control. The home crowd’s frustration grew as their team found themselves four goals down with 45 minutes still to play.

The second half saw Sunderland attempt to salvage some pride, but Forest maintained their intensity. Despite heavy possession for the hosts, they rarely troubled Forest’s defense. The visitors’ defensive organization proved too strong for Sunderland’s attacking efforts.

Granit Xhaka controlled the midfield for Sunderland, earning a rating of 8.0 and making two key passes. However, his efforts proved insufficient to spark a meaningful comeback. Nikola Milenković stood out for Forest defensively, making three tackles across 96 minutes.

Forest added a fifth goal in stoppage time when Elliot Anderson fired home in the 90+5th minute, completing a comprehensive victory. The 5-0 scoreline represented Forest’s most dominant performance in weeks.

Forest dominated possession with 62 percent of the ball but created fewer clear chances than their expected goals suggested. Sunderland managed just 38 percent possession and registered an expected goals total of 0.67, reflecting their limited threat throughout.

The defeat leaves Sunderland facing questions about their defensive fragility and attacking impotence. Forest’s emphatic win provides hope for their survival bid, though much work remains. Both teams face critical matches ahead as the season enters its final weeks.
