Salah doing everything possible to partake in Anfield farewell, says Van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk said that Mohamed Salah is doing everything within his power to end his Liverpool career with an Anfield farewell, despite sustaining a suspected hamstring injury.

Salah was replaced by Jeremie Frimpong in the 59th minute of Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday after stretching awkwardly for the ball on the edge of the box.

The Egyptian left the pitch to a standing ovation and appeared to take every last second of the applause in as he slowly made his way off the pitch and down the tunnel.

Liverpool are awaiting scan results to determine the extent of the damage, though there is a possibility that the Reds’ win over Palace was Salah’s final game for the club.

It would be a disappointing end to the 33-year-old’s time on Merseyside, having announced he would be ending his successful nine-year stint at Liverpool at the end of the season.

Salah has made 440 appearances in all competitions for the Reds, scoring 257 goals as well as providing 119 assists, while also winning nine major honours, which include two Premier League titles and the 2018-19 Champions League.

Liverpool’s final league game comes against Brentford at Anfield on May 24, and Van Dijk said that even if Salah was unable to participate in the match, that he would still get the goodbye his time at the club deserves.

“I know he is doing everything in his power to be back on the pitch as soon as possible,” Van Dijk said.

“If you get injured at this stage of the season, especially in the situation he is in, there are only two more home games left for him.

Arne Slot offered an update on the injury that forced Mohamed Salah from the field during the second half of our 3-1 win over Crystal Palace:

“It’s a combination of feelings that go through your mind. Hopefully he won’t be long. Maybe he’s back next week, maybe not. I have no idea.

“He will get the send-off regardless. I don’t think that is the thing at this point, we shouldn’t think too far ahead.

“Knowing Mo, he is a quick healer and with the right people around him, let’s see.”

Should the curtain have already been drawn on Salah’s trophy-laden time at Liverpool, he ended it fittingly having scored in the first Merseyside derby at Hill Dickinson Stadium on April 19.

In what was his final match against rivals Everton, a game Liverpool won 2-1 thanks to Van Dijk’s 100th-minute header, Salah equalled Steven Gerrard’s nine goals to become the joint-top scoring player in Premier League Merseyside derbies.
