Desmond Bane: ‘it’s terrible’ as Magic fall to Pistons in game 7 after 3–1 series collapse

Desmond Bane delivered an honest assessment after the Orlando Magic were eliminated by the Detroit Pistons 116–94 in Game 7 at Little Caesars Arena on Friday. “It’s terrible,” he said, summing up the mood after a series that slipped away following a 3–1 lead.

Bane pointed to rebounding as a decisive factor in the swing of the series. “The rebounding. In the games that we won, we controlled the glass. The ones we lost, we didn’t,” he said, highlighting Detroit’s physical edge in key stretches.

He also credited Detroit’s defensive adjustment and execution under pressure. “I think they turned up their pressure. I think that was an adjustment they made throughout the series,” Bane said, acknowledging how the Pistons’ intensity changed the tone late in the matchup.

The Magic guard also reflected on how momentum shifted in Game 7 after early mistakes and foul trouble disrupted Orlando’s rhythm. “That’s on me. I got in foul trouble. Wasn’t on the floor over that stretch. They were able to make shots,” he said.

Detroit’s transition game further widened the gap, with Bane noting the consequences of turnovers. “They got out in transition off a couple of our bad shots and turnovers. Good teams make you pay for stuff like that,” he said after finishing with 11 points, five rebounds, and five steals.

Franz Wagner’s absence due to injury remained part of the broader conversation, but Bane refused to lean on it as an excuse. “Franz has been a warrior… injuries happen. It’s unfortunate and he shouldn’t feel like this is on him,” he said.

Looking ahead, Bane emphasized internal development as the priority after Orlando’s first-round exit. “We just got to grow as people first and grow our games,” he said, adding that the group must respond with a stronger mindset next season.

He also addressed teammate Jalen Suggs, stressing the impact he brings beyond scoring. “Jay does so many things that impact winning. Whether his shots are falling or not, he can’t bear the weight of that,” Bane said, pointing to Suggs’ defensive energy and leadership.

Bane closed with a reflection on the season’s ending after a competitive series that saw Orlando push Detroit to seven games. “We were a game away… we felt like we were right there… and we didn’t,” he said, underscoring the frustration of a playoff run that ended just short of the second round.
