If the 2000s were a decade of baseball analysis centered around establishing the very concept of a baseball player’s value to his team, and the 2010s became a search for how to extract every last ounce of that theoretical true talent, one could argue that this decade, we’ve moved away from such absolutes. Instead, our modern times have been modeled after the concept of “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” of finding competitive advantages in development and coaching, then using them to create value rather than discover it. In one sense that makes our jobs harder, because while we can still quantify the effects, we can only do it in retrospect. We’re back to watching shadows on the cave wall. But when it comes to transactions, it’s exciting: It allows us to look at players not as stat lines, but as representations of what they could be.
And boy, is there a lot of “could be” in this trade. It’s hard to imagine the last time it was such a big deal when four players were swapped having combined for precisely zero 2026 WARP. But, of course, it’s not about what they’ve done. It’s about what they will do, and given that all four players have multiple years of service time remaining, they have a lot of future to unfold. So instead of breaking down why two contending ballclubs viewed these four guys as expendable, let’s look at what they saw in their new acquisitions when they closed their eyes.
