The Cincinnati Reds have added two new pitchers to the roster

On Thursday afternoon the Cincinnati Reds made three roster moves in order to add two new pitchers to the organization. The organization picked up right-handed pitcher Ron Marinaccio from the Pittsburgh Pirates and right-handed pitcher Chase Solesky from the Tampa Bay Rays off of waivers and then optioned him to the minor leagues.. Outfielder Blake Dunn, who underwent elbow surgery and will miss the rest of the season, was moved from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list to open up the needed spot on the 40-man roster (the Reds had one spot open following their trade deadline deals).

The 31-year-old Marinaccio saw time in the bullpen this season with both the San Diego Padres and the Pittsburgh Pirates. He’s been in the big leagues in each of the last five seasons, spending 2022-2024 with the New York Yankees before joining the Padres in 2025.

For Marinaccio, 2026 has been by far the worst season of his MLB career. From 2022-2025 he pitched in 108 games and had a 3.02 ERA while throwing 125.1 innings. In that span he had given up just 81 hits and he struck out 149. He did struggle with control, though, as he walked 65 batters and his 16 more during his first four seasons.

This season his ERA was 4.79 with the Padres in 33 games and then 6.75 in four outings with the Pirates before Pittsburgh placed him on waivers. Between the two teams he threw 52.1 innings with a 4.99 ERA while giving up 55 hits, 10 home runs, 20 walks, and just 42 strikeouts. After striking out 9.7 batters per 9-innings pitched before 2026 the right-hander’s strikeout rate dipped to 7.2 per 9-innings pitched this season.

Velocity hasn’t been the problem as it’s in line this season with where it’s been in the past. But this year he’s been throwing his fastball less than ever and has been throwing his cutter significantly more than ever. Perhaps going back to fewer cutters or even eliminating it altogether like he did in 2022-2024 could lead to different results.

Chase Solesky made his MLB debut earlier this year. He pitched on May 18th and allowed two runs in 3.0 innings on six hits, a walk, and he had four strikeouts in a 16-6 win for the Rays. It is the only game he’s appeared in at the big league level.

While in the minor leagues, Solesky has mostly been used as a starter where he’s pitched 23 games in relief while starting 126 games. In 2026, though, he’s only made seven starts with Durham in Triple-A while pitching in 16 games as a reliever. Things haven’t gone well in the season for him as he’s posted a 6.79 ERA while giving up 70 hits in 54.1 innings for the Bulls.
