Former FSU QB Thomas Castellanos the latest to sue the NCAA

Seemingly, everybody is suing the NCAA nowadays, and former Florida State Seminoles and Boston College Eagles quarterback Thomas Castellanos is next on the docket.

Don’t feel too bad for the NCAA, because this is a problem it brought on itself. Years of inconsistency regarding eligibility and money-hungry power grabs from schools and conferences have met the financial incentives of the NIL and transfer portal era.

That has caused a perfect storm.

Former Indiana Hoosiers and (for a brief moment in time) Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Brendan Sorsby was suing the NCAA to prevent it from being able to punish him for betting on his own team as an admitted gambling addict.

It really is the Wild West, and the NCAA has only itself to blame.

As far as Castellanos is concerned, he’s trying to take advantage of a recent court injunction (stemming from the NCAA’s new 5-in-5 rule) that has granted athletes from the class of 2022 a chance at a fifth year of eligibility.

Castellanos doesn’t just want eligibility, though. He wants to be able to enter the transfer portal. He wants to come back for 2026, but he doesn’t want to do so for Florida State.

The portal, which used to seemingly always be open, is only open from Jan. 2 to Jan. 16. At that time, Castellanos was preparing for the 2026 NFL Draft, but he went undrafted.

“Castellanos is expected to file a lawsuit in Texas, requesting an injunction against the NCAA and for a judge to allow him to enter the transfer portal,” Pete Nakos of On3 reported. “With last week’s ruling in the U.S. District Court of Colorado, Castellanos was granted a fifth year as part of the class-wide preliminary injunction against the NCAA.”

Castellanos played in 12 games for FSU last season, throwing for 2,760 yards and 15 touchdowns compared to nine interceptions. He also rushed for 557 yards and nine touchdowns.

Nakos and On3 are also reporting that Castellanos has received “preliminary interest from a range of schools” as either a quarterback or an “athlete.”
