Welcome to Tuesday Takes, where I give you three takes from the Big 12. It was a jam-packed week full of exciting news, but several things caught my attention over the last few days.
Texas Tech Still Wants Texas
If there is one thing that Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire isn’t afraid of, it’s a challenge. After calling out the Texas Longhorns all summer long, it appears that he wasn’t quite done yet with the people in Austin.
During the Texas High School Coaches Association convention last week, McGuire sat next to Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian and even put his arm around him. While he made it known that there was no bad blood between the two, I know that deep down he still wants a piece of Texas.
Of course, as a college football fan in the Lone Star State, I would love to see that, and I am sure so would the rest of the country. We need more in-state rivalries to continue, and I am happy to see Joey not afraid to call out Texas.
Get Used to Robots
I have heard of robots cleaning, and even making drinks during MLB games, but what about for football? Well, Oklahoma State joined the movement recently thanks to their new partnership with Monarc, a sports technology company based in Chicago, which introduced a robot, “Seeker,” that is capable of throwing touchdowns, kicking field goals, and executing punts.
While it may not look like a typical robot, it is essentially a launcher-type device – similar to those automatic free-throw retrievers. Several schools are already using these devices, and Oklahoma State has now joined the party. Believe it or not, I think we better get used to seeing robots around when it comes to college sports.
The Big Ten Will Take Shots at the Big 12
Tuesday is the start of Big Ten media days, and after listening to the SEC for four days last week, I have a feeling that the Big Ten isn’t going to hold back on anyone, including the Big 12.
They are going to bring up the fact that they have won the last three national championships and beat their chest. Don’t be surprised to hear them say that they are the best football conference in the country from top to bottom (even though we know it’s a lie) and how every other conference doesn’t stack up.
Who will say that will be interesting, but I know it’s coming. I know I find Greg Sankey annoying, but if there is anyone worse, it’s Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti, who never stops running his mouth and does whatever he can to ruin our beloved sport.
