Christian Nørgaard Joins Everton from Arsenal on Two-Year Deal

Everton have completed the signing of Christian Norgaard from Arsenal on a two-year contract for an undisclosed fee, with the Denmark midfielder becoming David Moyes’ fourth addition of the 2026 summer window.

The 32-year-old moves to the Hill Dickinson Stadium after a single season at the Emirates Stadium, where he collected a Premier League winners’ medal without ever establishing himself in Mikel Arteta’s first-choice midfield. Neither club disclosed the fee, although the deal has been widely reported at around £7million. The signing addresses the most obvious gap in Everton’s squad. Idrissa Gueye departed as a free agent at the end of last season, leaving Moyes without a specialist holding midfielder, and James Garner has undergone surgery ahead of the new campaign. Norgaard arrives as a direct answer to both problems.

He is also a leader by trade. Norgaard captained Brentford through their establishment as a Premier League club, making 196 appearances across six years in west London and starting 120 top-flight matches over four seasons. Moyes has consistently built squads around experienced professionals who set standards away from matchdays, and with Seamus Coleman no longer playing, that voice was in short supply.

The tactical fit is straightforward too. Norgaard is a screening midfielder who protects the back four, wins his duels and keeps possession moving, and he carries a genuine aerial threat from set pieces. Everton’s midfield now reads Norgaard alongside Hayden Hackney, Merlin Rohl, Tim Iroegbunam, Carlos Alcaraz and Harrison Armstrong, giving Moyes competition he did not have in June.

He explained that conversations with Moyes and Everton’s recruitment staff had convinced him the project was worth joining, and that the atmosphere he experienced as a visiting player had left a lasting impression. Recalling a trip to Goodison Park with Brentford, he described a stadium that felt physically alive.

Norgaard added that he had been surprised by how much of that intensity survived the move to the new ground, and said he had spoken at length to a former Everton player who spent several years under Moyes before making his decision.

Christian Norgaard’s career in numbers

Norgaard arrived in England in 2019 after spells with Hamburg, Brondby and Fiorentina, and quickly became one of the most reliable defensive midfielders outside the traditional top six.

His single season with Arsenal produced a title medal and a little over 1,000 minutes across all competitions. His only Premier League start came on the final day at Selhurst Park, where he was withdrawn at half time as the Gunners closed out a first championship in 22 years.

Arsenal signed Norgaard from Brentford in July 2025 for a reported £10million plus add-ons, on a two-year deal with the option of a third. He was recruited as cover and competition following the departures of Thomas Partey and Jorginho, but the subsequent arrival of Martin Zubimendi and the emergence of Myles Lewis-Skelly pushed him down the order.
