Sunderland’s pursuit of Dayann Méthalie has turned into a test of patience.
The Black Cats have made the Toulouse defender a priority, but the deal was never likely to be straightforward.
Méthalie has gone from academy prospect to valuable first-team asset in barely 12 months.
Born in Toulouse, he spent his earliest years with Colomiers before joining his hometown club’s youth system. His senior breakthrough arrived on the opening weekend of last season, when he started a Ligue 1 victory away to Nice.
He did not disappear after that impressive introduction.
Methalie went to make 27 Ligue 1 appearances, bagging two goals and managing 1,884 top flight minutes last term, a proper workload for a defender who only turned 20 in February.
His progress has given Toulouse control of the situation.
Méthalie’s current deal runs until 2030, meaning the French club have no need to sell, and they can demand a premium based on his age, potential and importance.
That helps explain why the negotiations are becoming more expensive.
Sunderland are not simply paying for what Méthalie is now, but Toulouse are pricing on what he might become after several seasons.
He is 6 ft 2, naturally left-footed and capable of playing at left-back, left-wing back, left midfield or on the left of a back three. His long stride helps him cover space quickly, while his size and pace gives him real potential to thrive in England.
Méthalie has one full season of senior top-flight football, and moving across the channel would bring pressure, faster matches and a more demanding schedule.
However, Sunderland have shown that they are prepared to trust young players when the pathway is right.
Europa League football means Régis Le Bris needs more than one reliable option in every defensive position. Reinildo brings experience on the left, while Méthalie could provide energy and eventually grow into the role.
The club’s quiet summer has made this chase even more significant.
Thomas Meunier remains Sunderland’s only completed signing, arriving on a free transfer from Lille.
Previous reports suggested Sunderland had moved ahead of Newcastle in the race for Methalie, but they’ve had an opening bid rejected for the player despite a claim from The Guardian they were closing in on a deal.

Santi Aouna now says that Toulouse want a fixed payment worth around £26 million for Méthalie.
According to the Foot Mercato journalist, no interested club is willing to go beyond about £21 million guaranteed, despite discussions continuing.
That leaves a gap of roughly £4.3million before bonuses or clauses are even considered.
The most encouraging part for Sunderland concerns Méthalie’s preference.
Aouna claims the defender has made joining the Black Cats his only priority, giving Sunderland leverage while Toulouse wait for their asking price to be met.
Player preference alone will not complete the transfer, particularly with Méthalie tied down for four more years.
However, it reduces the threat posed by rival clubs and gives Sunderland time to search for a compromise.
The next move now belongs to the Black Cats.
They must decide whether Méthalie’s potential justifies moving closer to Toulouse’s demands or whether £21 million is the limit for a player with one senior season behind him.
