Irish boxer Lee Reeves remains in hospital after being stretchered from the ring following a dramatic tenth-round knockout defeat to Gary Cully, with promoter Frank Warren confirming everyone at Queensberry is hoping for positive news.

Reeves produced the performance of his career at Dublin’s 3Arena and appeared on course for the biggest victory of his professional life before the contest turned in devastating fashion.

The Limerick southpaw was widely regarded as being ahead entering the final round before Cully dramatically changed the course of the contest, dropping Reeves twice in the tenth before ending matters 53 seconds into the session.

Reeves remained on the canvas after the finishing punch and was taken from the ring on a stretcher before being transported to hospital.

Lee Reeves

In a statement released after the fight, Frank Warren said: “All our thoughts and prayers are with Lee Reeves and his family at this time as he remains in hospital.

“Everyone at Queensberry is thinking of him and we’re in constant contact with his team regarding his condition as we hope for positive news.”

Cully immediately turned his attention to Reeves’ wellbeing after celebrating the victory.

“My prayers and thoughts are with Lee Reeves, hopefully he’s okay,” said the new BUI Celtic super lightweight champion.

“He came in there as a big underdog after fighting relatively at a lower level up until now, but he really showed that he can operate at a higher level. Huge credit to him.”

Support Pours In

Among those sending well wishes was Limerick Treaty Suicide Prevention, where Reeves serves as both an ambassador and an active member.

The organization posted: “Everyone at Limerick Treaty Suicide Prevention is thinking of our ambassador and colleague, Lee Reeves, during this time. We’re all behind you, Lee.”

No further official update on Reeves’ condition had been issued at the time of writing.
