After 5 long years of waiting, former UFC double champion Conor McGregor is finally returning to the octagon this weekend to run it back with Max Holloway.

“The Notorious” broke his tibia and fibula in 2021 during his trilogy bout with Dustin Poirier. Following recovery and rehabilitation, the Irishman served as head coach on TUF 31 opposite Michael Chandler. In 2024, at UFC 303, he and Chandler were supposed to lock horns in the main event. However, the Dubliner was forced to step out due to a toe injury.

The UFC has now released footage of the exact moment McGregor broke his toe.

Watch: Exact moment Conor McGregor broke his toe

In the latest episode of UFC 329 Countdown, Conor McGregor described how he got injured before UFC 303. While sparring without protective gear, McGregor landed a kick that snapped his baby toe. On the latest episode, while talking about the unfortunate injury that made him pull out for the first time from a UFC bout because he did not want to enter the octagon in a state of damage, he said:

“There were lapses of concentration in the training. I am the lead of the training. So if I am lapsing in concentration, it filters down, and that is what took place. The training partner had no protection. Next thing you know, bang, I broke my fuc*ing toe. The injury happened. It was very, very difficult. It was my only time I ever pulled out of a fight for the UFC. It was a very tough one.”

During the same episode, “The Notorious” also talked about the 2021 catastrophic leg injury that halted his career. He added:

“I knew the leg had the stress fracture going into the bout. It was numb. I was in a boot prior to the bout, walking around. I stepped up and rocked on… The damage had been done on the leg, and it was accumulating, and it snapped, and that was it. It happens.”

Check out Conor McGregor’s comments below:

🗣️ The toughest business of all is to fight business. And I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a difficult period of a few years.

I knew the leg had the stress fracture going into the belt. It wasn’t known. It was in a boot prior to the belt.

This time, however, the Irishman has been extremely careful. He has taken every possible step to avoid pre-fight injuries, such as wearing protective gear at all times and making his team and sparring partners know what type of training they will be doing.

As UFC 329 fight week begins, there has been no negative news coming out of his training camp, and “The Notorious” is ready to ‘son Max Holloway’ and paint a “McGregor masterpiece” on July 11.

🗣️ Conor McGregor:

“I’m working hard, same thing every day. No ego, we leave our ego at the door. We are learning, working our shots and preparing ourselves.

Now returns McGregor, to show once again the level and the difference. It’s a masterpiece on July 11th. A McGregor… pic.twitter.com/aD6UKSAmr7
