David Benavidez is targeting a return to Las Vegas on Sept. 14, the traditional Mexican Independence Day weekend, with Saul Alvarez scheduled to fight in Saudi Arabia.

Following his stoppage win over Gilberto Ramirez, Benavidez said he intends to position himself on the September date that has long been tied to Canelo’s Las Vegas appearances.

“I think it’s in the best interests for my career to keep trying to fight May 5th and September 14th,” Benavidez said via the Ring. “Canelo’s over there in Saudi Arabia, so he leaves it wide open for me. This is a great date, we put on a great show for the people, and I’ve earned it.”

Benavidez headlined in Las Vegas on Cinco de Mayo weekend for the first time and indicated he wants to remain active on the sport’s two marquee dates tied to Mexican boxing fans in the United States.

David Benavidez has built his recent schedule around Las Vegas, where most of his fights have taken place, and said he prefers to continue fighting in the United States moving forward.

“I’ve been professional for 13 years, since I was 16 years old,” Benavidez said. “I started from the bottom and went all the way to the top, calling out the best of the best. I did it the hard way. Nothing was ever given to me. So, now that I’m here, I think I deserve to fight on this card on this date.”

Canelo has fought on Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Independence Day weekends in Las Vegas multiple times over the past decade, but his September bout is set to take place in Riyadh, creating an opening for that slot in the U.S. market.
