Steph Curry scores 49 points to silence Victor Wembanyama, Spurs in NBA Cup thriller

SAN ANTONIO — Stephen Curry got the best of Victor Wembanyama — again.

The Golden State Warriors star scored 49 points, including two free throws with 6.4 seconds left, to complete the Warriors’ comeback and earn a 109-108 win over the San Antonio Spurs in NBA Cup play.

For the second straight night, Curry put in a dominant performance against San Antonio. The 37-year-old scored 46 points in Wednesday’s win, then followed it up by hitting big shot after big shot to carry the Warriors throughout the game. He finished 16-of-26 from the field and 9-of-17 from beyond the arc.

It was Curry’s 74th regular-season 40-point game and 44th since turning 30, tying him with Michael Jordan for the most since reaching that age.

STEPH CURRY IS GOING OFF 🤯

HE’S UP TO 45 POINTS AND 9 TRIPLES.

IT’S A 1-POINT GAME WITH UNDER 4 TO GO.

The difference in Curry’s performance on Friday started before the game even began. After his split with Under Armour became official on Thursday, Curry took the court at Frost Bank Center on Friday night wearing Nike Mambacita Kobe 6’s. Both heels were in gold lettering, with the left reading “Kobe” and the right showing “Gigi.”

While Curry wore his Curry Brand shoes before the game, he put on a performance that would surely make the Bryants proud. Just like he did in the gold medal game at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Curry did just a little bit more than Wembanyama late. The Spurs’ phenom had 26 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks, including a thunderous dunk on Draymond Green that didn’t count and a swat of Jimmy Butler on a fast break to maintain San Antonio’s lead in the closing seconds.

This Wemby swat down the stretch?

RIDICULOUS.

But Wembanyama didn’t get the ball to end the game. Instead, Spurs point guard De’Aaron Fox missed a jump shot on the ensuing Spurs possession, then missed another from nearly the same spot after Curry’s two free throws.

After a blowout loss in Oklahoma City on Tuesday, Curry sealed the Warriors’ two biggest wins of the season.

This story will be updated.
